Dr. Yanjin Zhang
Mentor
Dr. Yanjin Zhang had veterinary training background from Shandong Agricultural University, Shandong, China. He continued his post-graduate training in Microbiology & Immunology and got M.S. degree from China Institute of Veterinary Drug Control, Beijing, China. His thesis research was on rapid methods for the detection of Rabies virus infection. He got his Ph.D. from College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA in 1998. His dissertation research focused on monoclonal antibody preparation, molecular virology and vaccine development against porcine reproductive and respiratory virus (PRRSV). He had postdoctoral training at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas, USA and worked on molecular virology and virus-cell interactions of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). He was promoted to an Instructor at the same institute in 2001. He was recruited as an Assistant Professor in 2002 at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He conducted studies on morpholino oligomers as antivirals against PRRSV, KSHV and hepatitis E virus (HEV). He joined the VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maryland, College Park, MD at the end of 2005 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. He continues his study on molecular virology, virus-cell interactions and vaccine development for PRRSV, HEV, Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2. Currently he serves as Director of the Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBSC) graduate program in the Department of Veterinary Medicine. He is also a faculty member of Molecular and Cell Biology Program (MOCB). He has over 65 peer-reviewed publications, two book chapters, and several patents or invention disclosures.
